Gear That Keeps Up: What a Georgia NSTRA Handler Actually Needs in the Field
Share
If you've run a brace at a Georgia NSTRA trial, you already know the gear math. Thirty minutes on the clock, pointing-breed dog in heavy cover, judges watching, brush pulling at every piece of equipment you own. The gear either keeps up or it slows you down.
Here's the setup we run and recommend for NSTRA handlers — Georgia Region, Team Georgia, or anywhere else the shoot-to-retrieve game is played. It's the same gear that quietly works in the background while you're focused on the dog.
The lead: Short Handlers for the walk to the line
At the breakaway, you need a lead that's quick to release and tucks away fast. A 55" leash sloshing around in the briars after you cut your dog loose is in the way. Our Short Handlers Lead — 32" Biothane with Brass Quick-Release Snap is built for exactly this moment:
- 32 inches total — enough handle to control the dog, short enough to tuck into a bird vest after release.
- Italian brass quick-release snap — clean disconnect, no fumbling in gloves.
- Biothane Super Heavy Beta — won't absorb morning dew, mud, or that one unexpected creek crossing.
The stainless French snap version is the lower-cost option; the brass quick-release is the one most handlers end up with after they've used both.
The collar: 1" Biothane with D-Ring + free engraved brass tag
Every dog in your box needs a working collar that doesn't quit when the course gets wet. Our 1" Biothane Dog Collar with D-Ring is the standard — 5 colors, stainless or black hardware, sizes 15" to 21" to fit a Brittany, a GSP, an English pointer, or a setter.
Every collar ships with a free personalized engraved brass ID tag — your dog's name on one side, your phone number on the other. Some NSTRA grounds require ID tags; we include one so it's never a reason to miss a brace.

The belt: Sportsman Biothane Belt + accessory loops
Field belt that doesn't fail. Our Sportsman Biothane Belt carries your knife, your shells, your phone, and whatever else you've strapped on — without soaking up sweat, swelling after a rain brace, or stretching out by the end of the day. 1.5" wide, three colors, three hardware finishes.
What makes the belt actually useful on an NSTRA course is what you can add to it. Our Biothane Belt Accessory Loops slide on without taking the belt off, giving you clean attachment points for:
- Your Short Handlers lead — clip it on the hip when it's not in the dog's hands.
- E-collar remote — pick the loop with a bolt snap and your Garmin, SportDog, or Dogtra remote has a dedicated spot. No more fishing in a vest pocket between braces.
- Whistle lanyard — the lanyard goes around your neck but the loop keeps the whistle itself on the hip when you're not blowing it (quieter, less bouncy during a point).
- Beeper collar, extra snaps, line clippers — if it has a ring or a snap, the loop will hold it.
Loops come in nickel or brass hardware, with a ring or a bolt snap depending on what you're attaching. Run two or three of them — one for the lead, one for the remote, one for the whistle — and your vest pockets stay empty for shells and birds.
The whistle: Biothane lanyard with optional Fox 40
Our Biothane Whistle Lanyard comes in high-vis Yellow or Orange, with stainless or brass hardware. Add a Fox 40 (the tournament-grade pealess whistle) and you've got a ready-to-go lanyard without the paracord stink after a wet season. Pair it with the accessory loop above so the whistle rides your hip between calls.
Why Biothane for NSTRA specifically
Georgia NSTRA grounds pull every weakness out of your gear. Thorn country around Macon, swamp edges in middle Georgia, cold rain in January. The things that destroy leather and nylon — water, sweat, mud, cold, UV — Biothane shrugs off.
- Doesn't absorb water. Same lead and collar at the end of the day as the start.
- Doesn't stink. Wet-dog smell doesn't soak in.
- Doesn't crack in cold. Winter braces don't stiffen the leash.
- Wipes clean with a damp cloth. No conditioning, no oiling, no care routine.
