Choosing a Hunting Belt: Why Biothane Beats Leather
Share
A hunting belt sounds like a small piece of gear. It isn't. It holds your shells, your knife, your release, and the keepers for your collar holder. It rides against your hip for hours in heat, mud, and rain. The wrong belt is one of those small things that quietly ruins a hunt. Here's how to pick a good one.
The problem with leather hunting belts
- Sweat. Leather soaks up sweat from your body and rain from above, then it stretches, gets heavy, and starts to smell.
- Drying. When it finally does dry, it dries stiff. Half a season in and a leather belt is a different shape than it started.
- Stink. See above. The smell never fully comes out.
Why Biothane belts are different
Our Sportsman Biothane Belt is cut from the same Biothane Super Heavy Beta we use for our hunting leashes. The result is a belt that:
- Doesn't soak up sweat or rain. Wipe-clean with a damp cloth and you're done.
- Doesn't stretch out. Same hole, same fit, season after season.
- Doesn't stink. Toss it in the dog kennel bag and pull it out tomorrow.
- Stays flexible in cold weather and won't crack in summer sun.
How to choose
1. Width
For most hunters, 1.5" is the right width. It's standard buckle-compatible, accepts most belt accessories and collar holders, and looks good in the office on Monday too. Skinnier belts won't carry shells comfortably; wider belts get in the way of a hip-mounted holster.
2. Color
We make our Sportsman Belt in Blaze Orange (high-vis, can be used for safety), Electric Green (a favorite with bird-dog folks), and Dark Brown (looks like leather without acting like leather).
3. Hardware
Three choices: Black (low-profile, hides wear), Antique Copper (a leather-look pairing without the leather), or Stainless Steel with Orange Keeper (our most popular for blaze-orange belts). All are buckle-compatible if you ever want to swap.
Sizing
The single biggest mistake people make is ordering their pants size. Don't. Measure an existing belt from the end of the buckle to the hole you actually use, and order that number. Up to 60" is standard pricing — over 60" please request a quote.
One more thing
Pair the belt with our Belt Accessory Loop for whistles, lanyards, and a beeper if you run a beeper collar. The loop slides on and off without taking the belt off.
